  • Actress Ruby Rose shared a few makeup-free selfies on her Instagram story.
  • The selfies reveal a breakout on one side of her face.
  • Rose said it was caused by talking on her phone and by a "reaction to hotel pillow cases."
  • Experts say both can cause skin problems.

We're used to seeing celebrities flaunt poreless, flawless skin — so it's nice to see photographic proof that they deal with breakouts, too. Actress Ruby Rose of "Orange is the New Black" shared one such breakout on her Instagram story this Sunday.

"I'm a human, it happens," she captioned one of two makeup-free selfies. "One side of my face is clear and the other is a mess. Dermatologist says it's from the bacteria all over the phone interviews I did for PP3 and a reaction to hotel pillow cases (which I already know)." ("PP3" is an acronym for "Pitch Perfect 3," Rose's latest film, which just premiered in Sydney, Australia.)

Phones really can cause acne, as dermatologist Dr. Erin Gilbert explained to Business Insider.

"[Bacteria] on your cell phone in conjunction with oil and makeup that build up on your cell phone over the course of the day or the week — it can clog your pores and actually increase the inflammation in the skin. And this is why people are getting acne from their phone," Gilbert said.

To minimize these kinds of breakouts on your own skin, Gilbert recommended regularly cleaning off your phone with an alcohol pad or an antibacterial wipe.

Rose's breakout was also accompanied (or made worse) by a "reaction" to her hotel's pillowcases. That's more common than you might think, too. Laundry detergents and fabric softeners are common skin irritants, according to the US National Institutes of Health, and may cause rashes that look like burns. Luckily, this kind of irritation is often easily treatable with topical medicines.

And no matter its cause, Rose certainly didn't let her acne stop her from rocking a stunning gown as she walked the red carpet later that night for the Australian "Pitch Perfect 3" premiere.
