Kevin Spacey entered a not guilty plea to an indecent assault charge Monday in front of a judge in Nantucket, Massachusetts, after being charged with allegedly sexually assaulting an 18-year-old man.
The actor didn't speak during the arraignment, so the state formally entered the default not guilty plea on his behalf.
Judge Thomas Barrett also ordered Spacey not to contact the victim or his family.
The actor is charged with sexually assaulting the man in 2016. The man's mother, Boston news anchor Heather Unruh, said Spacey bought him drinks and assaulted him without his consent. The victim also sent his girlfriend a video of Spacey groping him, according to police.
Sixteen people have publicly accused Spacey of sexual misconduct. British police have three ongoing investigations into sexual assault accusations against him. Prosecutors in Los Angeles County declined to charge him on one charge, citing the statute of limitations. But a separate Los Angeles County investigation is still ongoing.
Spacey tried to avoid his arraignment in Nantucket Monday, arguing that his presence would "amplify the negative publicity already generated in connection with this case," but Barrett denied his request. His next court date is March 4.
