- The singer's fans are devastated.
In a recent interview with The Guardian, Shania Twain, noted country singer and pop culture icon, said she would have voted for Donald Trump in the 2016 US presidential election.
"I would have voted for him because, even though he was offensive, he seemed honest," she said of Trump. "Do you want straight or polite? Not that you shouldn’t be able to have both. If I were voting, I just don’t want bullshit. I would have voted for a feeling that it was transparent. And politics has a reputation of not being that, right?"
But the singer did not actually cast a vote in the US election because she is a Canadian citizen.
Still, Twain's fans took to Twitter, where they vented their frustrations over the singer's political views that don't impress them much.
My world is shattered...

Man, I feel like a woman (who’s part of the 53% of white women who voted for Trump). https://t.co/u833Wfmgpc

People are also pointing out that Twain's comments were published less than a week after she appeared as a guest judge on "RuPaul's Drag Race."

Wait, wait: was Shania Twain really just on RuPaul’s Drag Race then came out of the cut with that Trump comment, because what is consistency

Others are defending Twain, saying she has a right to her own opinion.
I love Shania Twain. Her opinions are her own. 🤷🏽♀️ https://t.co/MIVh70l5Zy

You *are* aware that actors/musicians/athletes have their own political views, right? And they may conflict with yours? They shouldn’t have to apologize for having opinions. You’re also free to not support them financially.

And the world still turns! #ShaniaTwain
But after facing backlash online, Twain apologized and walked back her statement in a thread of tweets, calling her original comments "awkward."
I would like to apologise to anybody I have offended in a recent interview with the Guardian relating to the American President. The question caught me off guard. As a Canadian, I regret answering this unexpected question without giving my response more context (1/4)

I am passionately against discrimination of any kind and hope it’s clear from the choices I have made, and the people I stand with, that I do not hold any common moral beliefs with the current President (2/4)
— Shania Twain (@ShaniaTwain) April 22, 2018
I was trying to explain, in response to a question about the election, that my limited understanding was that the President talked to a portion of America like an accessible person they could relate to, as he was NOT a politician (3/4)
— Shania Twain (@ShaniaTwain) April 22, 2018
My answer was awkward, but certainly should not be taken as representative of my values nor does it mean I endorse him. I make music to bring people together. My path will always be one of inclusivity, as my history shows. (4/4)
